Current Projects

  • Rural eye care through Laxman Eye Hospital-. In Bihar, eye care services are inadequate, and many ophthalmologists in the state lack necessary skills. Most blind individuals in Bihar have a monthly family income below Rs. 1000 ($12). Each household with a blind patient faces a loss of income, perpetuating a cycle of poverty. The situation is grave, with many people in Bihar suffering from various eye problems such as cataracts, refractive errors, corneal blindness, and glaucoma. SMUS has established a 50-bed eye hospital in Muzaffarpur, Bihar’s second-largest city, primarily serving patients from the rural northern regions of the state. The LEH delivers compassionate, affordable, and quality eye care for everyone, restoring sight to over 20,000 patients each year.
  • Vitamin Distribution drive – SMUS aims to reduce inequity by reaching the most vulnerable populations – pregnant women, infants, and young children
. The magnitude of malnutrition is influenced not only by diet but also by other related factors such as sanitary conditions, living conditions. We work to improve nutrition for pregnant women, infants, and young children by reaching the unreached places, particularly the interior parts of rural Bihar where accessibility is limited due to inadequate infrastructure. These communities often live in isolation, and within them, the most vulnerable are pregnant women, infants, and young children. we focus one community at a time. Through SMUS’s comprehensive programs and membership, we are able to connect with these underserved communities and provide the necessary support.
  • Rural health care through Community outreach & awareness- Community outreach is an essential part of SMUS’s work. Through our community engagement program, SMUS informs, educates, and communicates about prevalent diseases in society. We work with mothers to tackle malnutrition, emphasize the importance of immunization, and ensure follow-up. Additionally, we advocate for marginalized patients to access various health schemes. Our team of multi-purpose health workers, counsellors, and advocates actively participates in awareness and sensitization efforts. One of our major interventions is the Hut-to-Hut outreach visit, where we screen every individual with the principle that no one should be left behind. Our team conducts an in-depth analysis of each home visit, assessing family and health problems associated with the household.

Sadar Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in Muzaffarpur, serving the populations of nearby districts, including Muzaffarpur, Sheohar, and Sitamarhi, which are predominantly rural areas. Since Sheohar and Sitamarhi do not have major hospitals, most patients from these districts utilize the services of Sadar Hospital. SMUS provided sanitation, food, accommodation, electricity, and advocacy for patients at Sadar Hospital and other Primary Health Canters (PHCs), which offer curative, preventive, promotive, and family welfare services.

  • Mahadalit Netra Jaanch Shivir evam Chasma Vitran Abhiyan
(Campaign for Eye Screening and Spectacles Distribution for Marginalized Scheduled Castes) is an initiative by the Health Department of Bihar aimed at the most marginalized and impoverished scheduled caste communities, who often lack access to eye care. Through a partnership with the government, SMUS conducted screenings in Mahadalit colonies and provided spectacles and surgeries to those in need.
  • FAME Project–FAME stand for Food, vitamin A supplements, Measles vaccination and Education.
The purpose of the project was to demonstrate that every aspect of this protocol is essential to prevent childhood blindness caused by Vitamin A deficiency. The vast majority of rural children in Bihar are at risk. Our team regularly interacted with the children, monitored their progress, and tracked their improvement. (Performa attached)
  • Ambulance donation by Mahindra Finance CSR – We are thankful to Mahindra Finance CSR for donating a Tata Bolero ambulance. The ambulance will be used to transport identified patients to the hospital and back home.
  • Eye Surgeries for Vision India Foundation, Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) and National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) – SMUS has previously performed cataract surgeries for these organizations. SMUS began its eye care journey with the RSBY scheme and later collaborated with the District Blindness Control Society, Vision Foundation of India, and the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE).
